The 21 mile-long lake was formed in the 1940s when The Tennessee Valley Authority built Watauga Dam to harness the beautiful, sparkling, clear, river which found its beginnings at the foot of Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina. The Appalachian Trail from Georgia follows the ridge of Iron Mountain through the county and into Virginia offering only one of many great hiking trails at hand.

The Cherokee Forest provides many faces of nature for great camping, hunting, hiking, streams, trout fishing and nature watching.

Roan Valley Golf Estates offers a magnificent 18-hole championship Golf Course with challenging holes and glorious views. There are 15 other golf courses within an hours drive.

Riders who come to Callalante ATV Trails and Stone Mountain Trails report them as some of the best ATV trails they have ever ridden. There are also horseback trails and cycling trails available. The Mountain City Parks and Recreation Facilities is home to swimming, skateboarding, walking trail, cycle trail, sports fields, and lots of other activities.

A short drive will have you into the Mountains for snow skiing or whitewater rafting or into Bristol for one of the most exciting NASCAR tracks on the circuit. Just 11 miles away is one of the premier bicycle riding opportunities on the Virginia Creeper Trail.
